About Registration

Getting onto the register is an important step for all allied veterinary professionals. Being registered involves three steps:

  1. Qualifying or demonstrating that minimum criteria have been met. Registration is available for all graduates in programmes on the list of approved qualifications.

  2. Applying for registration including verifying qualification/registration criteria, identification, and proof of residency. This is a one-time activity. Once you are on the register, you remain there whether or not you have an active practicing certificate.

  3. Applying for an annual practicing certificate each year. Click here to read more about the APC process.

To register as an overseas qualified professional

Check the list of approved qualifications to ensure your qualification is listed.

Veterinarians who do not also hold an appropriate veterinary nursing qualification may not apply for registration as a veterinary nurse. This is because the required competencies and skills carried out by veterinary nurses differ significantly from those of veterinary surgeons.

If your qualification is on the list - Apply for registration as per the criteria for NZ professionals above. If you are new to the country and have not yet started work (and thus cannot meet the residency requirement for the Annual Practicing Certificate), email us a letter from your NZ employer stating intent to employ, and a verified photo of your current NZ residency visa. Email to register@avprc.org.nz .

If you are coming from a country where you are registered, you can maintain continuous registration by requesting your awarding body email us with a letter of good standing to register@avprc.org.nz .

If your qualification is NOT on the above list  - contact a NZ Education provider for information on the Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) process which can be used to apply your veterinary experience or qualification toward achieving a New Zealand veterinary nursing/technology qualification that would make you eligible for registration in New Zealand. Please note not all providers offer this process.
